In the 1st round of the last preliminary tournament of the 23rd Mingren, amateur Hu Yuqing(8d) defeated professional Fang Jie(7d) by resignation, and, in another surprise win, Tao Xin(4d) defeated Nie Weiping(9d) by a stunning 8.5 points.

After round 2, Korea has two players left - Lee Sedol and Heo Yeongho. Japan is still alive with Cho Chikun’s defeat of Qui Jun, which leaves China with a very strong contingent to finish out the tournament - Kong Jie, Wang Xi, Gu Li, Xie He, and Gu Lingyi. In a surprising loss, Lee Changho was eliminated from the tournament at the hands Gu Lingyi. Heo Yeongho defeated Chang Hao by a narrow margin of half a point.

Takao Shinji(9d) defeated Kono Rin(9d) by half a point in the final game of the 3rd Daiwa Cup Grand Champion tournament. This is Takao Shinji’s first Daiwa Cup Grand Champion title win. He has held the Daiwa Shoken Cup title twice, in 2006 and 2007. Takao Shinji has held 14 major titles in his career, including the Honinbo, Meijin, and the Judan.
